Yes.....you need to get your ends trimmed, what time is better than the present?

Many clients act as if it's the end of the world when you tell them that they need their ends trimmed. I'm sure that sense early childhood your mother or stylist has been trimming your ends. I hear so often that a stylist gave a client a haircut instead of trimming their ends. Yes there may be some scissor happy stylist but most are trimming exactly what needs to be trimmed. If you go months or years without getting your ends trimmed, then yes expect a haircut. But to the defense of the client, yes the stylist must or should show the client just how much needs to be taken off before chopping into their hair. If you are seeing a new stylist, a better term to use than requesting a ends trim is "can you lightly dust my split ends." This way you and your stylist will be on one accord as to how much should be taken off. Please don't be afraid to ask to look in the mirror as your ends are being dusted/trimmed. A true professional will not be offended when asked if you can observe.

How to Prevent Split Ends....

  1. There is no true way to remove split ends aside from trimming your hair, but you can take care of your hair and prevent their return.
  2. Identify whether or not you have split ends. The scientific name for them is Trichoptilosis, a longitudinal splitting of the hair fiber, and there are several types:
  • Generic split ends
  • The same strand of hair splitting multiple times
  • Splitting occurring in the middle of the hair strand that will appear as a hole if the strand is bunched up
  • Single strand knots, mostly seen in dry, curly hair.
    3.   Get a regularly trim, every six to eight weeks or as needed. Trims should be at least 1/4 to 1
inches.Removing split ends keeps your hair healthy and growing strong.
    4.   Don't believe when products claim to "heal" split ends. Most products can seal the split ends to
help it look healthier, but they aren't reversing the damage.

  3. During the winter season comes the inevitable static electricity, it builds up after brushing hair, also from your coat, hat and scarf. To get rid of static, increase the humidity levels in your home to eliminate the static cling. Low humidity cases the hair to dry out. Quick and easy fix is to use a dryer sheet to wipe through your hair or on your brush, or spray hair oil, or wet your hand or comb and comb through gently....stay tuned this week for a more in depth blog on how to prevent static.

  4. Thank you for this blog. I have not been good to my hair over the years. I had no idea of the diversity of the split ends your hair could have.

I do have a question - why does your hair have split ends in the middle of the hair shaft?

  6. You mentioned that there aren't any products that actually do no repair/mend split ends, but are there any products that PREVENT split ends??

  7. This information is very useful. I know a lot of my freinds are afraid of the "scissor theory" because of the length of hair that sometimes gets taken off. However, what they fail to realize is its the clip that keeps the hair growing and healthy! Thank you for posting this! You're the BEST!!!

  8. Brandy, the split ends in the shaft can come from normal wear and tear, clothing, and/or products.

  9. Lady J., to pull out your natural curl pattern, you would use a all natural hair care product line. KeraCare has a natural haircare line that works wonders as well as Kinky-Curly another one of my favorites. But when using these natural products it is important to use the full line, using a different shampoo may cause the hair to not have a uniform curl pattern as well as may cause chalky residue.

  10. Blessed, the best products to use to mend or prevent split ends are moisture shampoo and conditioner, and a weekly deep conditioner. You can mix, eggs, yogurt, and mayo together and let it sit on your hair and ends for 15-20mins. and this will help prevent split ends.

  11. Hi Chazzy! First I would like to say that I LOVE your blogs. My question is...What's the best type of moisturizing conditioner to use in my hair everyday.

  12. Hi Chazzy: I am trying to keep my grays around my edges dyed. My stylist told me to go lighter in color. What do you suggest?

  13. Grey hair can be ver tricky! You would actually want to go darker because grey wil colr a couple shades ghter than the desired color. For example, if you use a brown risne, it wil show on most grey as a honey blonde, or if ou use black, it will showon grey as a dark brown color. I personally use Rusk, Goldwell, or Paul Mitchell's color line and they all seem to tackle stubborn grey the best out of alll previously used products.

  14. I'm Glad you love the blog, thanks! The best moisturizer to use daily is Influence oil sheen conditioning spray or just a dime size drop of extra virgin olive oil. When purchasing products consult with a stylist or make sure you research the products online before making the final decision. You really want to look for porducts that don't include alcohol, mineral oil, sulfate, or paraben. Most hair product's at the local beauty supply store's and in the drug stores may not be the best product for your hair. Ask a stylist to purchase the products for you.
